COMBA TELECOM JOINS THE TELECOM INFRA PROJECT’S OPENRAN PROJECT GROUP

Collaborating with Industry Innovators to Boost Mobile Communications with its Open Radio Solutions

(17 March 2020, Hong Kong) – Comba Telecom Systems Holdings Limited (“Comba Telecom” or “the Group”, SEHK stock code: 2342), a global leading solutions and services provider of wireless and information communications systems, today announced it has joined the Telecom Infra Project’s ("TIP") OpenRAN project group to contribute viewpoints and solutions based on GPPP-based (General Purpose Processing Platforms) projects in the OpenRAN ecosystem.

TIP was formed in 2016 as a solutions-focused, collaborative approach to building and deploying global telecom network infrastructure. With hundreds of members – including global operators, developers and system integrators – TIP is an important platform to connect its members in different infrastructure projects and across a variety of project scenarios. The OpenRAN project group is one of the initiatives of TIP, focusing on developing vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology based on open interfaces and community-developed standards.

Unlike traditional RAN architectures, OpenRAN solutions feature open interfaces and hardware/software disaggregation to give operators more choice and enable deployments of multi-vendor RAN architectures. As such, many operators are considering deploying OpenRAN in their network architectures, and many operators are now trialing or rolling out TIP-incubated OpenRAN in their markets around the world.

The results of a survey show that 43% of respondents are open to replacing current vendors when deploying OpenRAN, and 84% of operators will consider deploying RRUs and BBUs from different vendors in OpenRAN deployments[1]. OpenRAN solutions are likely to be the new trend in RAN architectures.

Collaboration with TIP will benefit the open ecosystem with flexibility and a faster pace of development. Comba Telecom, a pioneering OpenRAN hardware provider, has in-depth knowledge and experience in radio technologies, offering a range of highly adaptable network products such as high power Remote Radio Unit ("RRU") and Open Radio Gateway with Open RAN interface to address the bandwidth demands for operators in all the mobile connectivity standards (2G/3G/4G/5G/Wi-Fi).

Ms. Annabel Huo, Executive Director, Senior Vice President of the Group and President of Comba Telecom International said, “Over the years, Comba Telecom has developed a strong footprint in radio technologies. Joining hands with industry innovators in the TIP's OpenRAN project group marks an important milestone for the Group. The alliance with TIP will further propel the Group forward in our pursuit of excellence, and achieve the common aim with our partners to accelerate wireless technology transformation along with the mobile network evolution.”

Mr. David Hutton, Chief Engineer of TIP said, "The OpenRAN network architecture technology has widespread industry acceptance in the wireless industry across the globe and more demand for OpenRAN solutions is expected in the coming years. We are delighted to welcome Comba to the growing ecosystem of TIP OpenRAN partners.”
